Kay Gasei Catalogue

Published by EY PROJECTS, this publication brings together works presented in Kay Gasei’s solo exhibition Black Whimsy, alongside selected paintings from across the artist’s broader practice. Together, they offer an overview of Gasei’s ongoing exploration of myth, fractured narratives, memory, and the subconscious through painting.

Gasei approaches painting not as a representation of reality, but as a process of inscription—an uncertain trace between consciousness and the subconscious. Drawing from personal memories, historical references, and imagined worlds, he develops a visual language in which expressive marks, recurring figures, abstract forms, and petroglyph-like signs collapse different times and spaces. His images remain deliberately open-ended, allowing fragments of stories and symbols to emerge without settling into a fixed narrative.

The publication includes the twelve newly created works shown in Black Whimsy at EY PROJECTS in 2026, alongside works from different periods of Gasei’s practice. Moving between darkness and playfulness, absurdity and beauty, these works reveal an artist continually testing how images come into being—and how painting might transform fragments of the familiar into something strange, elusive, and newly imagined.
