ABOUT

Hyunhee Doh (born in 1996, Busan, Korea) earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 2021, and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the Royal College of Art in 2023. Hyunhee Doh is now based in London and Korea.

Hyunhee Doh explores the dynamic nature of sensation and memory over time through the medium of hanji , the traditional Korean mulberry paper. By engaging in repetitive gestures, she creates transient marks that either fade away or build upon each other, resulting in new forms. The creases and imprints left on the hanji serve as visual records of perceptual shifts and, more deeply, transformations in identity, positioning Doh’s practice as a reflection on the interplay between time and existence. She approaches the abstract concept of time as a tool for self-exploration, layering and washing away pigments mixed with glue on hanji to reveal changes in sensory perception. As the paper absorbs water, wrinkles and marks emerge and disappear cyclically, embodying a continual process of transformation. Over the past decade, Doh has incorporated influences from both Eastern and Western cultures, as well as digital environments, cultivating a unique sense of temporality that transcends traditional linear notions of time.
